UW-Whitewater's American Marketing Association chapter will host the 2009 Regional Conference 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 6 in Hyland Hall and the University Center. Students have the opportunity to listen to guest speakers from several regional and national companies such as Johnson Controls, Kohler Co., Target and Land's End. The conference theme is "Marketing in a Sea of Change," and is based on challenges the current economic climate brings and the obstacles facing companies using new technology to reach their customers. Speakers will focus on three specific aspects of marketing: Internet and social media, sustainability and diversity, and buzz and viral public relations. The regional conference is open to all majors. "Marketing is a topic which is a part of our everyday lives, even if you aren't a marketing or business student," conference co-chair Julie Pruess said. "This conference will open students' eyes to ways in which [marketing] impacts your life, whether its learning how to market yourself to an employer or understanding the meaning of an ad campaign for your favorite store." Alex Gibelalde, a member of the product marketing sector for Google Spain, will be the keynote speaker for the conference, and Dennis Dunlap, CEO of the American Marketing Association, will provide an introduction. "We are very excited about this year's conference because of the variety of speakers we'll have on hand," Pruess said. The event will begin with a continental breakfast and the Career Corner in the University Center Ballroom where students can network with more than 20 businesses looking to recruit students. Students then go to Timmerman Auditorium in Hyland Hall for the introduction and keynote speech. Attendees then break off to listen to one of three speakers of their choice. During a lunch workshops, attendees can sharpen skills such as resume writing and interviewing.
