Rival fans can live together in peace

It's no secret that Brewers and Cubs fans don't exactly get along, and as a Cubs fan, I completely understand why you Brew-crew fans hate the obnoxious beer-drinking guy with the backwards-Cubs hat heckling fans in the bleachers … because quite honestly, I hate that guy too. But I'm not that fan. I'm unfortunate enough to be born and raised a real Cubs fan. I say unfortunate because I root for a team that hasn't won the World Series in an entire century.

I am about to make a rather bold request and ask that Brewers fans stop hating Cubs fans. Or at least try to understand where I'm coming from in saying Cubs fans already have enough problems … we don't need the entire state of Wisconsin hating us.

Being a Cubs fan is hard work. Ever since I can remember, the word "October" puts a knot in my stomach, and my heart aches. October for me, as well as all Cubs fans, means nothing but shattered hopes and another year wasted. Year after year. I wonder why I pledge my loyalty and allegiance to a bunch of men who hurt me, but the answer is simple: I love them. I love the Cubs just like you love the Brewers.

To make matters even worse, Cubs fans already have a natural enemy: White Sox fans. Chicago is split up by baseball. The north side is full of Cubs fans, the south of Sox fans. The rivalry is heated, intense and borderline dangerous. As much as it pains me to say it, we are hated everywhere. To the north and to the south, Cubs fans just can't catch a break.

I am not asking you to like the Cubs. I know there's no way that Brewers fans will ever like the Cubs, and vice versa. They are two great baseball teams, and for that reason alone, they will never get along.

All I'm asking is that you give Cubs fans a break. We are tortured souls with a rough past. We say "next year is here" to ourselves enough times that we actually start to believe it. Will this be the year? Who knows. But either way, I think I speak for all Cubs fans when I say that I could do without the constant harassment when I wear my Cubs shirt on campus.

We should rejoice in our love for baseball, not bicker about standings. Everyone should stop focusing on heated, hated rivals and bring the attention back to the love of baseball, and although I think the Cubs will win the World Series before that ever happens, I'll keep my fingers crossed.
