Opportunities to further a nation’s eminence amongst its peers come around maybe once a generation.

The time has come to ensure health care to every American. The U.S. House of Representatives understands this call to action. Sunday the House backed President Barack Obama’s health care bill, in attempt to reform the current crisis in this country.

America is the only industrialized nation that does not guarantee health care to all its citizens.

Health care in America is adrift, resulting in life or death for nearly 47 million Americans who cannot afford or own insurance. Sadly, the American health care phenomenon is costing our citizens their health and our country billions of dollars.

It is not only the average citizens who suffer. Our doctors are also affected by the ailing health care system when insurance companies set their own terms without consequence.

The sole reason for this atrocity rests on the shoulders these bloated mercenaries when they decide what the common man or woman can get for treatment and how much or how little they can receive.

Meanwhile, health care, prescription costs and unemployment rates are skyrocketing, while coverage for these drugs is decreasing. The health care industry and drug companies make billions while people dying of cancer cannot afford basic health care and medications.

The facts are stark and clear cut, no matter your political views. We all understand that America desperately needs health care reform to ensure every American citizen gets the affordable care they need and deserve.

Under the current structure, too many Americans fall between the cracks created by large corporate healthcare providers; dental, vision and mental health coverage are luxuries for most that they just cannot afford.

America must break from the shackles of the past and change the tide; all Americans should have health care no matter what their economic status.

There are several ideas from both the left and the right. It is our responsibility to ensure that our legislature works on our behalf, not on the behalf of the insurance and pharmaceutical companies.

Some steps that can be taken include: personal choice, tax fairness, market expansion, deregulation of medical savings and government mandates. Ultimately, it needs to come down to consumer freedom.

Health care reform must make health care more than just care for the sick. Authentic health reform has an obligation to improve the health of our nation, through investing in prevention and wellness initiatives that help keep Americans healthy and out of the hospital.

Presently, Americans spend more on health care than any other country in the world, yet we don’t live longer.

According to recent government polls, without health care reform the cost of health care for the average family of four is projected to raise $1,800 every year for four years.

The American society should remember the old adage, and they know that an ounce of prevention truly is worth a pound of cure.

Preventing illnesses, diseases and disorders are an essential component of health reform and American society.

It is not nearly enough to provide coverage and keep the status quo ... just remember illness can happen our homes, our communities and our families.
