The UW-Whitewater campus and community will have the opportunity to bring Christmas to children living in Third World countries through Operation Christmas Child.

Operation Christmas Child is a non-profit organization that collects shoeboxes filled with gifts and donates them to children in various countries across the world.

"These boxes go to children who suffer from abject poverty, something we don't see in America" Annette Wynn, who works with Operation Christmas Child, said.

The boxes are filled with toys, educational supplies, hygiene items and other gifts. Last year, students at UW-Whitewater donated 122 shoeboxes to the cause. This year, the Whitewater community goal is to donate 1,000 shoeboxes. The boxes that were donated went to many countries around the world, including Cameroon, Belize, Mongolia and Nepal.

Wynn said she hopes the UW-Whitewater campus community will get involved with donating to the cause.

Shoeboxes filled with donations can be dropped off at Crosspointe Church, 445 N. Warner Drive in Whitewater. Donations are accepted year round. Donations for this year's holidays are being accepted until Sunday, Nov. 22.
