The UW-Whitewater music department will be holding a Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds concert Nov. 8 at 3 p.m. in the Young Auditorium. Members of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds will be performing a variety of pieces as a group and individually. Glenn Hayes, director of bands, said students are encouraged to attend the event, assuring attendees there is something for everyone. The event will feature work by UW-Whitewater music students as well other music written for band. Sunday's event will showcase interesting music rich in diversity, setting the performances aside from many that have been seen by Whitewater students in the past. "There will be a world premier of a composition written by a UW-Whitewater student," Hayes said. "Anthony Kading's 'Pacificum' will be performed. It is a major work for wind band. I fully expect it will be published in the future and is worthy of national competitions. They will also hear the first conducting experience of student conductor Chelsea Olm." Olm, a senior flautist at UW-Whitewater. will make her conducting premier with a piece titled "Traffic" by composer Ned Rorem. Olm has been playing the flute for 14 years. "It's probably one of the most interesting concerts we have because the music is really diverse," Olm said. Hayes said he hopes students who attend the concert will come away from the event with a better idea and appreciation of the effort their fellow classmates put into preparing for an event of this caliber. "I hope students will take away a greater understanding of the variety of music in the 21st century. I also hope they will have an increased awareness of how diligently the student musicians work to achieve such a high level of artistic performance," Hayes said. Students interested in the event may contact the UW-Whitewater ticket office in the Greenhill Center of the Arts at 262-472-2222 for price specifications or other questions.
