Football team soars past Illinois Wesleyan in second round

Strong defensive effort helps Warhawks advance to quarterfinals against Wittenberg next Saturday

The Warhawk football team defeated Illinois Wesleyan, 45-7, in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

UW-Whitewater led 17-7 at halftime and pulled away in the second half scoring on four of its five possessions in the final 30 minutes.

The Warhawk defense forced four turnovers - three interceptions and a fumble.

Led by senior defensive lineman Anthony White, who had 2.5 sacks, the 'Hawks held Illinois Wesleyan to only 30 total rushing yards.

More impressively, the 'Hawks held the Titans to minus 4 yards rushing through three quarters.

Sophomore running back Levell Coppage rushed for 188 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Warhawk offense, which surpassed the 500-yard total once again.

Senior Jeff Schebler, a Gagliardi Trophy finalist, kicked a 46-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.
